Romance-Paper towns

The non-diegetic sound to open the trailer is very eerie, while the camera shot used at the same time is a birds eye view shot of the 'paper towns' linking the setting with the chosen title. Then there is a voice over which is key as it gives the audience background about how the two main characters met. However when Margo is introduced the tempo increases conforming to the usual stereotype of the way men view women. The non-diegetic fades out and the voice over then turns into diegetic dialogue between the two characters thus enabling the audience to focus on the dialogue. This upbeat tempo is then introduced again as the characters spend time together, this suggests a development in the characters relationships in a very positive way. The uses of cheesy clichés like when Margo states 'everything's uglier up close' and he replies 'not you' this reveals to the audience that the main genre of the film is romance however does not dwell on this keeping the excitement and pace of the trailer so the audience do not lose interest. The backing music then changes again to a more haunting tone suggesting that something bad has or is about to happen, conforming to the stereotype of romance when two characters fall for each other but there happiness is short lived. By changing the music tempo often it reflects the characters feelings in a more subtle way, the tempo starts to pick up as he starts to solve some of the puzzles. This would conform to the stereotype of romance films with happy endings and the lovers being reunited- another cliché many viewers would like to see. This upbeat music fades out at the end leaving very quiet non-diegetic sounds allowing the audience to focus on dialogue to become the focus once again, when the he echo's the same quote he said at the beginning of the trailer revealing very little information to the audience, enabling them to keep interest to go and see the film.


The establishing birds eye shot at the beginning shows the paper towns which not only introduces the audience to the setting it also links to title of the whole film. This then cuts to a long shot of him stood alone suggesting that he was lonely before Margo came into his life and as he is very small within the shot it illustrates him as unimportant and unconfident. By using medium shots on her it keeps the focus on her throughout the beginning of the trailer and how he cannot take his eyes off her but she seem disinterested, this would conform to the stereotype of the male being the chaser. Although the trailer jumps to them being in high school a similar representation is shown. He is still very interested in her, although he is now surrounded by his friends and no longer seen as lonely, she still seems disinterested in him. Therefore the medium shot of her climbing through the window may come as a surprise to the audience but then it leads to the main plot of the film, the medium shot uses the rule of thirds placing her in the centre as she is seen as the most important, while he is trying to play it cool. Two shot is used to show the development in their relationship as they are always positioned next to each other, when a shot reverse shot could be used to follow their conversation that would keep the distance between the two characters. Close up shots of the puzzles that he is solving shows the importance of them and how hard he is trying to find her, conveying his feelings to the audience, while using the long shot of the car it represents how he is willing to drive all over to find her further emphasising his emotions. A low angle shot of the boy at the end suggests that he is either on top of the world as he got the girl and is now untouchable or grows as an individual and now no longer feels he needs Margo in his life.


Margo is dressed in camouflage suggesting that in life she blends into the background, contrasting to the way that Quentin views her as to him she always stands out and is the focus of his attention. Quentin tends to wear plain dark clothing not giving him lots of the audiences attention while in the school environment Margo is dressed in white connoting innocence and peace. This contrasts to the clothing she is wearing when she appears in the window as she is wearing dark clothing connoting mystery and maybe even danger, the low key lighting helps to emphases' this.  Also the way she is placed much higher in the shot implies that she has control and he is almost left worshipping her, hence why he follows her crazy plans. Quentin then becomes the focus of the shots, and is placed higher than his friends suggesting that he has growing confidence due to Margo. The shot of the car crash implies how he thoughts get distracted when talking about her and helps to keep the audience interested this is followed by a montage of his friends having fun, this then flicks to a photo of her, suggesting that this new found confidence and happiness is brought on by her, this is reinforced when he admits to loving her. The final shot is in much brighter lighting suggesting that she has brightened up his life allowing them to have much happier times ahead.
