21 Jump Street-Comedy

The trailer starts with upbeat music and a school bell ringing that takes us back to a flashback of the two main characters, the music is similar as to what you would expect from an action film but with a twist suggesting the genre is comedy. Cheesy non-diegetic music is being played over the trailer in almost a mocking way suggesting to the audience that although this is an action film it is mainly comedy. The statement said by Jenko, Channing Tatums character, about 'are you ready for a life time of being bad ass' implies to the audience that the film is going to be filled with normal conventions of an action film, however this then cuts to a medium shot of the two of them on bicycles which is not a usual convention. A change in a music to a more upbeat pace when they make their first arrest suggesting their luck is about to change and although the characters appear immature they take their job seriously however this is quickly shot lived as they realise they made a mistake- cue more funny dialogue. The music then changes again to a more conventional backing music when the characters are busting in with guns to convey the serious side of their jobs and link to the clichés of actions. A final music change happens again when the pair arrive in their new setting, in the high school, to a much more hip and trendy music thus linking to the setting and their new personas. This music continues through till the end of the trailer, as well as more funny dialogue. The dialogue in the trailer keeps up the comedy aspect of the trailer and the continual change in non-diegetic music keeps the excitement throughout the trailer.

Establishing shot of the police station introduces the setting and hints that the main characters will be related to this setting, a flashback to them in high school also helps to introduce the comedy aspect as it highlights the unlikeliness of their friendship. A low angle shot of Jenko implies that he is above Schmidt and is the more masculine of the two characters. A two shot of them as they graduate as police officers as it illustrates the growing friendship between the two and how they believe this is the beginning of many excitement to come, this is contrasted by the two shot of them cycling to convey how they are not living the life they expected. The contrast in the two characters makes the film more entertaining because although they are close friends they both have very different personality. As soon as the setting changes to a high school environment the two tend to be shown in one shot foreshadowing that there may be future events that cause a rift in their friendship. The shot of them jumping over the car at the end further illustrate the differences in their personalities showing the audience how the relationship between them is just as funny as the situations they get themselves in.

Schmidt is wearing a white tshirt with a gold chain in the flashbach suggesting that he tries to be more gangster but it implies his innocence unlike Jenko who is dressed in more colourful clothing suggesting he was more important and more popular at high school, this is reinforced by him tackling him. Unlike some other trailers I have analysed the titles appear much later on suggesting that they are not as important in the marketing campaign, putting much more focus on the famous actors in the film. Throughout the time of them revisiting highschool Schmidt is dressed much brighter suggesting that he may have a more successful experience this time around, more the Jenko. They both wear white suits to the prom which could be seen as ironic as they have been put into this setting to hide but by wearing white they are standing out much more, keeping the comedic aspect of the trailer.
