Genre Summary
Conventions of Horror
The target audience of horror films tends to be young adults 16-30, this is because they tend to be too scary for anyone younger than 16. Once people become 30+ their taste in film genres changes and do not enjoy being scared. Directors target these types of films to these age groups by using characters of a similar age group, this allows the audience to relate to them more and get more aggravated when they do the wrong thing. However using themes like Halloween make some horror films more targeted to smaller children as they are more humorous than frightening.
AS production analysis
One problem we had when filming last year was lighting as we were filming during the winter it meant that the time period suitable for us to film was very small. We decided to film after school as it was the most convenient time for all of us enabling everyone in the group to be involved in the filming process. Although this was a good idea we failed to remember the sun set earlier each day leaving us with an even shorter time frame where the location was dark enough to look sinister but light enough for the camera to still pick up the images. This made re filming pieces difficult as we had to try and achieve the same lighting throughout. Personally, this year I feel we would benefit from using a higher quality camera especially if we were going to continue down the horror path as this would allow us to film in more low key lighting. Also as we were filming during the winter the cold weather meant that we did not want to spend a long time outside experimenting with different shot types and different angles which limited us when it came to the editing process. When filming again this year I would like to try multiple different shot types to stretch our capabilities more and make the editing process more interesting, hopefully allowing us to produce a trailer to be proud of.
Another problem we came across was the script and diegetic sound. During the planning stages we did not plan a detailed script this made it difficult when filming and the opening would have run a lot smoother if we had planned. When filming this year we will spend a lot more time on the planning stage as this is a key part and I feel we failed to understand the importance of this. Also the diegetic sound is not as clear as it could be due to the microphone on the camera not being a high quality. Ideally we would have recorded the sound again but due to lack of time we decided to stick with the original sound.
The planning process is definitely some thing that our group could improve on although we had a storyboard and had put some thought into what shots we wanted to include I don't think we realised how much planning it involves. Overall, I think the two of us worked together as we did meet the deadline and only had to reshot a few shots although these are some targets to work for this year:
1) Plan in more detail to help with the filming process, and make sure we actually take our plan to the location that we are filming at.
2) Invest in a better camera for us to achieve a higher quality trailer.
3) Leave plenty of time for the editing process so we can play around with the footage.
